A Journey Through Communication History, Part 1

Until 1876 (when the telephone was invented), Deaf and hearing people were equal partners in communication…

For the first part of the 20th century until the mid 1960’s, deaf people had to depend on their hearing family members and hearing neighbors to make phone calls for them…

A deaf engineer came up with a solution to enable deaf people to communicate over the phone by creating a home brewed modem that enabled deaf people to communicate by typing back and forth. The typing device hooked up to such a modem was a teletypewriter (TTY)…

To type on those devices required a communication protocol since we couldn’t type to each other at the same time.
